Zotero

An in-depth guide to using Zotero.

Introduction

Zotero works by adding code to your document. This codes is what allows Zotero to dynamically update your bibliography each time you add a citation.

If you are writing for publication, that code may cause problems. Many publishers cannot accept documents with embedded code for publication. Zotero makes it easy to remove the embedded code:

  1. Save a copy of your document and work with the copy. Removing the underlying code is irreversible.
  2. In the copy, click "Unlink Citations" in the Zotero toolbar. This will change your citations and bibliography from dynamic text to static text.
  3. Save the copy of your document. This copy can now be submitted for publication.
