DOIs are a frequently seen and referenced part of research. But they are often not given much thought. While they aren’t especially complicated to understand, it is worth knowing what they are, why they are important, and, how Galvin Library can play a role in helping you get one for your own research.
A DOI, or digital identifier, is essentially a permalink that helps keep any research you publish online accessible across time and platforms. It is essential to make sure your published research has a DOI and that you cite DOIs when citing work published online. They help other researchers and students reliably locate your work and reference it themselves.
A DOI is made up of two parts. The DOI prefix which is provided by the publisher using one of the DOI management services, usually Crossref or DataCite. The second part is a unique number applied to your paper. Galvin Library currently uses Crossref to provide DOIs for the journals we publish through OJS. Any journal published through Galvin Library will be added to our Crossref account, and DOIs will be created for both individual issues of that journal and articles within those issues.
