Services for Distance Learners

A guide to information and resources for distance learners.

Search for Articles

The easiest way to search for materials is by using the Illinois Tech Library Search.

Check out our Library Search User Guide below for more information about performing basic and advanced searches using this tool.

Accces Articles Online

Nearly all of the library's online resources are available from off-campus.

If you are using the Illinois Tech Library Search and find an article we have online access to, you will see a section that says "View Online". Underneath will be one or more links that you can use to access the article. You may be prompted to login using your MyIIT portal credentials; follow any prompts you are given. Once you have logged in, you may need to click through additional links to access the full-text of the article.

Make sure to access resources through the library's website, as this ensures that you are recognized as someone affiliated with Illinois Tech who should have access. If you run into any issues with accessing an online resource, contact the library.

Read Physical Articles

You may come across some articles that we do not have access to, or that we only have in physical print form. When that happens, you will want to use Galvin's interlibrary loan service, MyILL, to request the article.

If you are using the Illinois Tech Library Search and we do not have access to an article, you will see a section that says "How to get it" instead of "View Online". This will have a link to MyILL titled, "Galvin Library Interlibrary Loan for articles". Click on this to be taken to a  pre-filled request form in MyILL. Double check the information, and submit that request to have the article delivered to you electronically.

If we only have access to an article in physical form, you will see a list of physical holdings under a section titled "Get it"" instead of a link to MyILL. As a distance learner, you may still request this article using the direct link to MyILL below. Fill in the required information and be sure to mention in the "comments" field on the request form that you are a distance ed student.

Full Database List

The Illinois Tech Library Search searches through some of our library's databases, but not all of them. If you have a particular subject or type of resource you're looking for, try using a specific database.

Google Scholar

Google Scholar is a popular way to search for scholarly articles, reports, books, and more. Make sure to connect your Google Scholar account directly to your library account to streamline your access to articles.

Search directly below, or click the link to search in the Google Scholar interface.
