SSCI 209: Social Sciences Research Methods

Course guide for SSCI 209 covering library resources and other research tips

Background Research Activity

You need to brainstorm a central theme based on an article you have been provided. With a partner, discuss:

  • Which article have you picked, or are you most interested in?
  • What related topics or additional questions do you have? What theme do you think would be interesting?
  • Before looking for articles, is there anywhere else you will look for information?
  • What might you do if you get stuck?

Sample Topic

Is there a connection between air pollution, asthma, and race?

Evaluating Sources Activities

Part One: Evaluation Criteria

  1. Brainstorm 3-5 criteria you would use to evaluate a source. How would you decide if it was useful to you?
  2. Share your criteria on the class Padlet.

Part Two: Evaluating a Source

  1. Navigate to the sample article, "Assessment of neighbourhood-level socioeconomic status as a modifier of air pollution–asthma associations among children in Atlanta".
  2. Evaluate using the criteria we established as a group.
  3. Think about:
    1. What are some good things about this source?
    2. What are some potential issues with it?
    3. How might you use this source in a project or paper?
