Checking Things Out: Renewing Items

Everything you need to know when checking out books, laptops, movies, or anything else from the Galvin Library.

How To Renew Your Items

If your library item is going to be due soon but you need to use it longer, you may be able to renew the item and keep it for additional time.

Renewing Items Online

If the item you have checked out can be renewed, you can renew it online at any time.

Log into your library account using your IIT login credentials to view your currently borrowed items. After signing in, click your name in the upper-right hand corner of the screen, then select Library Card.

A summary of your borrowing activity will be shown, including a list of the items that you currently have checked out. You can renew them all by clicking Renew All, or you can select each item and renew them individually. You can also renew items that you have checked out from I-SHARE libraries on this page; visit the I-SHARE page in this guide for more information.

Requesting a Renewal or Due Date Extension

You can also reach out to Galvin Library staff directly to ask for a renewal. Email us at library@iit.edu with your renewal request, or call x76847 to speak with someone at the main circulation desk.

If your library item has reached the maximum renewal period but you need it longer, you may reach out to library staff to ask for a due date extension. Extensions are granted on a case-by-case basis; factors such as item availability and demand may determine whether an extension is granted.

Renewing Items from Other Libraries

Items from Other Illinois Tech Libraries

Illinois Tech includes several other libraries in addition to the Galvin Library. Each library has its own policies and staff. To request a renewal for an item owned by an Illinois Tech library besides the Paul V. Galvin Library, reach out to the staff of that library directly.

Items from Non-Illinois Tech Libraries

Items checked out through I-SHARE or through ILL may be renewable. Visit the non-IIT Libraries page in this guide for more information on renewing items owned by such libraries.
