Become a student proxy for a professor

Teaching Assistants can serve their professor(s) by becoming a proxy.  Proxies serve as a courier for the professor by retrieving professor's books on hold, and submitting course reserves.

  • Professors must request to add a student proxy to their library account.  Professors can come to the Circulation Desk in Galvin Library or email circdesk@iit.edu.

Submitting course materials for professors

Teaching Assistants can submit course materials for their professor.

Textbooks:

  • The library places all undergraduate textbooks on course reserve as long as the book is listed on the bookstore's website.  Late submissions to the bookstore will delay the library's ability to have the book ready for the first day of classes.
  • Professors can put their personal copies of textbooks on reserve.
  • Textbooks can be used inside the library for two hours at a time.
  • Full information on textbooks can be found here.

Articles, course notes, problem sets, exam answers, and more:

  • The library maintains electronic reserves of class materials that are not textbooks.
  • Submit the materials as a PDF via email, or in person (CD-Rom or paper copies) for the library to scan and put online.
  • A cover letter must accompany every individual item.
  • Students enter their IIT ID number to access electronic course materials.

Create an EndNote Web account

EndNote Web is free for current IIT students, staff, and faculty.  EndNote Web allows you to share bibliographies, citations, and folders with your professor and students.  Go to Research Tools to set up your account.

Another highly recommended free resource that anybody can use is Zotero, which is also accessible from the Research Tools page.  Zotero runs within your Firefox browser for easy adding of citations and PDFs.

Arrange study sessions

Use Galvin Library's group study rooms for exam review and small group work.

  • Rooms are fully enclosed and have flat-screen monitors and whiteboards.
  • Guarantee a room by reserving it online up to two weeks in advance.  Rooms can be used for two hours at a time.
  • Occasionally group study rooms are available near the Career Management Center on the upper level at a first-come, first-served basis.

Have a librarian teach your students

Librarians are available to instruct your students on conducting research:

  • Request library instruction if your class has an assignment that requires library use.  Librarians can make online course guides for the classes too.
  • Submit an Assignment Alert for upcoming "library assignments."  Or, if your professor is considering a "library assignment" have a librarian help design the assignment to maximize learning opportunities.
  • Suggest students attend a drop-in library workshop.

Learn how to use the library at home

You and your students can learn how to use the library at any hour without having to come to the library:

  • Video tutorials and PDFs demonstrate basic library skills from finding articles to requesting books and more.
  • Every major subject area on campus has a Research Guide detailing the best databases, reference materials, websites, and books for that subject.
  • Ask for help online via email or instant message.  Librarians are available during regular business hours and from noon to 4pm on Sundays.  Student assistants answer IMs in the evenings and the rest of the weekend.

Don't be afraid to ask for help

The library is here to help you! Any time you have a question do not hesitate to ask us.

  • Use the Circulation Desk for questions about book renewals, overdue fees, or other library account questions.
  • Use the Research Help Office for quick research help and troubleshooting.
  • Contact a subject librarian for in-depth research help over email or in person.
