什么是论文

论文（Research Paper）是教授指导学生学会对所学专业知识进行科学研究所写的一种学术论文。简单的说，写论文就是通过分析论据来论证自己的观点。这里的论据指的是所搜集的参考资料或调查实验结果。美国的教授非常重视参考文献的选择。

当论文的主题确定以后，有两个重要步骤来写论文：

论文=Research Paper= Step 1. Research搜集资料 → 图书馆

Step 2. Paper 写论文 →包括论文的格式，参考文献格式，语法修改 → 学校写作指导中心

中国和美国论文的区别1---名字

从名字上来看，在国内，论文主要强调的论证过程，也就是写的过程。

在美国，论文翻译成research paper。可以看出它强调的是research + paper，不光强调了论证的过程，还强调了research的过程。这就是美国教授很重视参考文献的原因。教授们想通过阅读参考文献，来观察同学们所搜集的资料。搜集资料有很多种途径，比如可以通过图书馆目录，数据库，互联网，问卷调查，采访等等。但是，论文的目的不在于收集并汇报资料。它的目的是指导你学习、研究一个科学主题，并能利用你所作的调查研究资料去分析，回答这个研究课题。教授希望看到的是你怎么样来理解这个课题，并不是简单的解释或注释你所读到的资料。

中国和美国写论文的区别2---参考文献

根据图书馆的问卷调查，在国内写学术论文时，最热门并且利用率最高的参考资料就是教科书，参考书和互联网。

在美国大学写论文时，教授通常需要很多参考资料，而且参考资料种类越多越好，主要有：

一般参考资料：字典，百科全书，年鉴
书籍（参考书）

数据库 Online Database: 找到相关的学术杂志，文章，资料

中国和美国写论文的区别3---利用图书馆

关于搜集资料，在中国时，大部分同学都是自己搜集资料，在网上找免费的资源，到图书馆借书，或者是寻求老师同学的帮助。

在美国大学，应该充分利用图书馆提供的资源，包括书籍，学术杂志文章（in print and online database)。找学校图书馆馆员（reference librarian)帮助搜集资料。我们的工作就是指导同学们如何搜集资料。但同学们有问题时，我们很高兴为同学们提供资源。可以通过一下几种方式联系我们：

Research Classes for International Students

30 Minutes to Success: Library Research Series for International Students

The library is hosting a series of 30 minute classes in March and April to help international students do library research smarter and faster. These short classes are designed to build your research skills just in time for your final assignments! Each class is taught by our international student services librarian, Yi Han. Yi completed her Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science in the United States, so not only is she an expert researcher but she also has tons of personal experience as a former international student.
