New students: About Galvin Library (the building)

A quick overview of the Galvin Library building and services.

Hours

During fall and spring semester, the library opens at noon on Sunday and remains open until 7 p.m. on Friday. The hours page of the library website will always have the most up-to-date information about the library's hours.

We usually close early with the rest of the university the day before a holiday, so be sure to check our hours before you head over.

Research Help Office

The RHO is located on the upper level, at the top of the main stairway. It is staffed by librarians (who have Master's degrees in Library and Information Science) and specially trained students. We can save you a lot of time and frustration, so ask us when you need help!

Bathrooms

There are two sets of public bathrooms, both on the lower level.

Group Study Rooms

The rooms on the lower level can be reserved for two hours at a time. You will need to make a reservation 24 hours ahead of time.Unreserved rooms are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The study rooms on the upper level are not reservable. They are also in the quiet section, so shhhhhh.

Quiet Study Area

The south side of the upper level is for quiet study only. If there are people talking in this area, use the chat widget above to ask for help in quieting them.

Office of Technology Services

The OTS support desk is located on the upper level of the library, next to the RHO. Come here for problems with your laptop or IIT Banner account.

Art Gallery

The Kemper Room switches out the art displays periodically throughout the year. It's a great place to visit when your brain needs a break. Like our page on Facebook to hear about upcoming shows and other library news.

Computers

There are over 45 computers for use, most on the upper level. Just use your portal user name and password to log in. There is also a media room on the lower level in case you need to play a CD or DVD.

Laptops

There are laptops available for you to check out from the Circulation desk on the lower level. They have basic productivity software like Microsoft Office, and also speciality software like AutoCAD.

Scanners

There are over 20 scanners connected to computers on the upper level, as well as a freestanding scanner that will email your scan to you when you're finished. There are directions taped to each scanner.

Printers

Printing works the same way anywhere on the main campus: select the type of print you want to make, then use the release station to start the print job.

You'll mostly use the IIT Windows BW Laser Printer selection to make prints on standard 8.5 x 11" paper (this is standard U.S. letter size) with black ink.

White Boards

They're on wheels, so just move them to where you need them. Markers and erasers are attached to the boards in bags. Have a dried out marker or eraser that stopped working? Take it to the RHO for a refill.
