Library Information for International Students

This guide contains helpful information for international students about using Galvin Library.

Finding textbooks

  • Students need to purchase their required textbooks from the bookstore. Most American universities follow this practice. 

  • Galvin Library has nearly every required undergraduate textbook and a few graduate textbooks on reserve. To use a textbook, please follow the textbook policy:

  • Library Use Only. Textbooks never leave the building.
  • 2- Hour Use. Textbooks are checked out to you for two hours at a time.
  1. Enter course, professor, or textbook information to search.
  2. Find the CALL NUMBER of the book and bring it to the Circulation Desk on the lower level.
  3. Use your student ID card to check the book out.

Searching for books about a topic

  • Step 1: Search for a book in the IIT Library Catalog.
  • Step 2: Search for a title, author or topic in the search bar. 
  • Step 3: Locate books on the proper bookshelf using CALL NUMBER. 
  • Step 4: Check out books at the Circulation Desk with your student ID card.

If you have questions searching or locating a book, ask staff at the Research Help Office for help.

Getting books from other university libraries

Didn't find what you wanted?--- Get Books from Other Illinois University Libraries 

  • Find and request books from 90 other universities in Illinois using the I-Share Catalog
  • In the IIT catalog, just select "All I-Share Libraries" on the top right to search the I-share catalog.
  • Books arrive in about 3 business days, and you will be notified via email when they arrive.
  • To request a book, you must sign in with your last name and student ID.

If the book you want is not available at IIT or through I-Share, search WorldCat.

  • WorldCat is an online catalog that contains the holdings of more than 8,000 libraries worldwide.
  • Click the Request this item button in the "External Resources" section of the item record to request a book.
  • Log in MyILL account. If you don't have a MyILL account, click First Time Users to create an account.

How to request a book from WorldCat?

  1. When you have found a book in WorldCat, click the "Request this item" link.
  2. You may be prompted to log in to your MyILL account. Log in your MyILL. 
  3. The item information will automatically be filled into the request form. Verify that the information is correct, then click Submit Request.
